The Holy Spirit leads us with wisdom we often recognize only in hindsight. This week invites us to trust His gentle direction, even when His guidance takes us where we did not expect to go.
When the Spirit of truth comes, He will lead you step by step into what is true and right, revealing what you need to know in God’s timing. (John 16:13)
When the Spirit Redirects Our Steps
There was a season in our military Journey when I prayed earnestly for something I deeply wanted: orders to Malmstrom Air Force Base (AFB) in Montana - my hometown area. I longed to be closer to family, closer to familiar places, and closer to the comfort of “home.” When the orders finally came through, I was thrilled. I thanked God for answering my prayer and began preparing my heart for what felt like a long‑awaited return home.
But two months before the move, everything changed. The orders were suddenly cancelled. Just like that, the door I had prayed for - the one I believed God had opened - was closed. We were reassigned to Fairchild AFB in Washington (state) instead.
I was disappointed. Deeply disappointed. I couldn’t understand why God would allow me to hope for something so strongly, only to take it away. I felt discouraged, confused, and honestly, a little heartbroken. I had prayed. I had trusted. And I didn’t get what I asked for. I felt an answered prayer had been taken away from me.
But the Holy Spirit was guiding me - even through the disappointment.
It wasn’t until two years later that the truth became clear. Had we moved to Montana, we would have been uprooted again shortly afterward - most likely to Florida, nearly 2,000 miles from my hometown. That move would have been far more difficult for me physically, emotionally, and spiritually.
Instead, God placed us at Fairchild - just seven hours from home. That meant I could be present for my younger siblings, watching them play sports, cheering them on, and being part of their growing‑up years. It meant I could “go home” when needed, without the emotional and physical strain of long‑distance travel.
At Fairchild, God also gave us something priceless: fellow military families who became our family. People who walked with us, prayed with us, and supported us in ways I could never have imagined. And spiritually, God allowed my faith to grow in ways I am quite confident would not have happened had we moved to Montana.
Looking back, I can see it clearly: the Holy Spirit didn’t deny my prayer - He redirected it. He led us to the place where we would flourish, grow, and be protected.
Sometimes the Spirit’s guidance looks like a closed door. But it is still guidance. And ultimately, it is always for our good.
The Spirit Who Leads Us Into Truth
Jesus promised that the Holy Spirit would guide us into all truth. That means Holy Spirit leads us not only into doctrinal truth, but into the truth about our circumstances, our decisions, and the paths we walk.
Sometimes His guidance feels like peace. Sometimes it feels like a nudge. Sometimes it feels like redirection. And sometimes - as my story shows - it feels like disappointment.
But even then, the Spirit is guiding.
Scripture affirms this:
Teach me to follow Your will, for You are my God. Let Your good Spirit guide me onto a steady, secure path. (Psalm 143:10)
All who allow themselves to be led by God’s Spirit show that they truly belong to Him as His children. (Romans 8:14)
Since the Spirit gives us life, we should stay in rhythm with Him, walking in harmony with His leading. (Galatians 5:25)
The Holy Spirit protects us from paths that would harm us, even when we don’t understand why He redirects us. He leads us gently, faithfully, and personally. He guides us into truth - not just the truth of Scripture, but the truth of God’s will for our lives.
And often, we only recognize His guidance when we look back and see His fingerprints all over the Journey.
Reflection Points
1. The Spirit as Guide
The Holy Spirit leads us with a gentle, steady hand. His guidance is never rushed or confusing. He directs our steps with wisdom shaped by God’s perfect knowledge of our needs, our limits, and our future.
2. Truth for the Journey
The Spirit protects us from confusion and deception by leading us into truth - not only biblical truth, but the truth about our circumstances, our decisions, and the paths we walk. His guidance brings clarity where our understanding falls short.
3. Hearing His Voice
The Spirit speaks through nudges, promptings, conviction, and peace. His voice is quiet but unmistakable. As we learn to recognize His leading, we grow in confidence that He is directing our steps.
4. Walking in Step with Him
Guidance becomes clearer as we stay close to the Spirit. When we walk in step with Him - through prayer, Scripture, and attentiveness - we begin to see His fingerprints in every season, even in the redirections we did not expect.
Closing Prayer
Holy Spirit, thank You for guiding me
with wisdom far greater than my own.
Help me trust Your leading,
even when Your direction surprises me
or takes me where I did not expect to go.
Teach me to recognize Your voice,
follow Your nudges,
and rest in Your protection.
Lead me into truth, steady my steps,
and help me walk in confidence
knowing that You are always working for my good.
Amen.
